Our mutual love of boxing is what brought Tonya and myself together.  Boxing sessions have been held in the Cannonvale park for quite a few years now.  Tonya has now taken them over and each week has an enthusiastic group of women attending. We met for tea after one of our morning sessions so I could get to know Tonya a little better.

How do you stay on top of housework?

I definitely do something everyday, usually in the middle of the day between 11 – 2pm.  During this time I include dinner prep as I have clients early morning and afternoon.

How do you manage juggling being a Mum and working?

I have fit my business into my mum life, it needed to be flexible. Due to my husband working 4 on 4 off, I have basically built my career around my kids and husband.

We all struggle with Mother’s guilt, what would be your advice to new Mums on how to cope with this and keep things in perspective?

If you’re a new Mum I would advise that you just go with your gut and do what is right for you. It is important to remember that as your kids get older, you can’t be their best friend. You are their parent first and your role is to show them the right path.

What is your number one guilty pleasure or indulgence?

Can’t say no to chocolate!! The only way around it is not to buy it.

Who do you admire?

Other women. I look at women who are trying to better themselves or doing what I would like to do. Including my parents.

What would you say is the best part of being a Mum?

Having little people come and tell you that they love you for no reason.

What would be the first advice you would give to a new Mum to be?

Do what is right for your own family.

I know we all try and aim for the perfect work/life balance, how do you keep everything together most days?

Run, Run, Run otherwise I’m not sure what to do next.

Do you have any hobbies?

Trail run, getting out doors, camping with family and cooking.

What is your favourite book?

The Book Thief and The Bronze Horseman.

What do you think is the key to a healthy relationship?

Keeping in touch and being mindful of having communication.

Being a Personal Trainer is relatively new for you. How did you get into it?

I have always loved being fit and being in the outdoors.  I was initially asked to by Tina Spence if I would like to take over her group fitness training when she left the area.

What is your most favourite part of your job?

Love the group fitness, the camaraderie and friendships.

Tonya conducts PT sessions, but you can also find her at the Cannonvale basketball courts on Mon/Wed 5.30pm or Tues/Thurs 9.30am.  These are a mixture of boxing and fitness circuits.  Find her on Facebook – A Fit Life by Tonya
