You would probably expect by being a professional makeup artist that I would have always had a skincare regime.
Well this is likely to be makeup artist blasphemy, but I didn’t really have a proper regime until about 3 years ago.
My reasoning for this is that I have never really found any products that actually worked or I felt connected to. Either the person sharing them with me or the results just weren’t there.
Sometimes I felt that I may as well just be putting water on my face, so I didn’t see the point in spending the time or money.
Now after many years working as a freelance makeup artist and dealing with a range of different clients along with different skin types, tones and ideas on their skincare. I do believe that your skincare regime is a very personal process and what may work for some may not always mean it will work for you too.
When I was young, I was the girl with rosey cheeks and freckles. Like all young girls I wanted to be something I was not. I wished for an even skin tone that didn’t involve freckles or a flushed complexion.
During the Summer months I felt that my freckles would gang up on me and all start holding hands, I didn’t want any more!!
My flushed complexion I have since found out in my adult life is called Rosacea, which I discuss in more detail here.
During my teenage years it was all about being out in the sun and getting a tan either by sun baking or going to the sun lounges (which are now banned). I also worked overseas as a Dive Instructor for a couple of years, so sun damage plays a part in my skin condition.
I now know that the two major factors in ageing skin are:
- 1 Sun Damage
- 2 Body’s Loss of Water – Nocturnal Trans Epidermal Water Loss
I am now more aware of my time in the sun and how often I am exposed and whether or not I wear a hat.
I always wear a hat when I go swimming and even when I head out to hang out the washing. It is so important to protect your skin from the Sun.
In order to help combat the body’s natural loss of water is where my skin care regime has come in. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to these products about 3 years ago and I have been turning back time ever since. I can safely say that my skin has never looked better. The key to hydrated and glowing skin is very simple. You must use products that will help maintain and lock in the moisture. You must also drink plenty of water, something my Mother taught me years ago. To be honest some days I am great with my water intake and others not good at all.
Being able to lock in your own natural moisture is the key to helping your skin heal itself.

Having healthy glowing skin, does not mean you have to invest in lengthy treatments or several different products. I use a maximum of three products per night and a minimum of one. I don’t have the time, I like it to be simple and effective.
I also believe that great skin doesn’t just happen overnight, it is a journey and encompasses more than just skincare but self-care as well. Exercising and a good diet will also help maintain that youthful glow.
We are in an age where we are surrounded by youth and beauty. I have said it before, but I truly believe in our race to turn back time and look younger, we ironically lose the essence of beauty itself.
Nothing can replace a natural youthful glow regardless of what age you are. A youthful glow is ageless.
